Retirement in Roatan is a Dream Come True

It’s no secret that retirement in Roatan is a dream come true. Read any article highlighting the world’s top retirement destinations and you’re sure to find our beloved tropical island featured. What makes Roatan such a favorite among retirees? Let me count the ways…

Roatan Offers a Low Cost of Living

Of course the cost of living being low is all a matter of perspective. If you’re coming from a place with a fairly low cost of living already, then you might compare prices in Roatan and disagree with my assessment.

However, an unbiased look would be to compare Roatan with other Caribbean islands. Regardless of your home region, comparing the island of Roatan with other island options in the region will show you costs on a similar basis.

Islands require import costs and limitations on products and some services – that’s universal to islands by nature.

But Roatan certainly offers a low cost of living for a tropical Caribbean island.

Roatan Offers a Friendly Community

It’s for good reason that Roatan regularly gets hailed as an easy place to fit in. With an English-speaking local community and an extensive expat community, new arrivals find it very easy to make new friends and to create a community in Roatan.

For most potential expats, a visit to Roatan is followed by several more visits before taking the big leap. Those visits offer you the chance to get to know people and to already start making friends.

Facebook groups are also very popular for Roatan residents, offering a way for you to keep in touch with those new friends even while you’re back home making plans. You can stay in contact and continue to make more connections so that your eventual move to the island is a seamless transition.

Residency in Roatan is Easy

If you’re retiring to Roatan, you can easily acquire your residency. Retirees in Roatan simply need to prove their monthly income and then you can apply for residency and enjoy a few bonus perks, too!

If you’re coming from the US or Canada, you can visit Roatan for up to 90 days without residency. This is a great opportunity to rent and get more familiar with neighborhoods and lifestyles before jumping into real estate.

I am always happy to connect you with a reputable attorney in Roatan who can handle your residency application – it is usually best to work on your residency simultaneously with a real estate transaction if you’re new to the island.

Real Estate is Affordable in Roatan

Retirement in Roatan can be even more affordable if you invest in real estate. While renting is a viable option for many, buying real estate offers you a rent-free lifestyle with an incredibly low cost of living.

Many retirees in Roatan sell real estate back home and purchase a new retirement home in Roatan mortgage-free. That opens up so many doors for your daily cost of living. Imagine all the fun activities you could do with that extra cash!!

Retirement in Roatan is a Dream Come TrueRetirement Roatan

Don’t you agree that retirement in Roatan is a dream come true? You can actually have it all here: Beautiful beaches, tropical climate, affordable real estate, low cost of living, and a wonderful community of friends and neighbors.

If you are considering retiring overseas, I strongly recommend you consider Roatan. While I obviously have a biased opinion, you can also listen to the experts who gauge retirement destinations around the world!

Roatan offers retirees an excellent quality of life. You’ll love spending your time outdoors and breathing fresh tropical air. You’ll enjoy a slower pace of life and a focus on daily wonders, admiring vibrant tropical flowers and swimming in the turquoise seas.

No place is ever perfect and there are compromises to be made regardless of where you choose to live. But I can personally attest to life in Roatan being my dream come true…I moved my family here for a better quality of life and we have never looked back!

Are you thinking about retiring to Roatan? Feel free to reach out with questions any time, I’m always happy to help!

Cruise to Roatan…And Never Go Home!

Visiting Roatan and purchasing real estateHave you ever daydreamed about just ditching it all and moving to a tropical island paradise? Maybe you’ve thought of taking a cruise, finding perfection, and just not getting back on the boat. Dreams can come true you know! Here’s an idea: take a cruise to Roatan…and never go home!

Wait, Where is Roatan?

Roatan is a pristine, verdant island in the Western Caribbean, usually on the same cruise itinerary as Mexico and Belize. Roatan is part of the Bay Islands of Honduras, which boast some of the world’s most beautiful coral reefs.

Roatan is often called the Gem of the Caribbean for its stunning green jungle, bright white soft sand beaches, and turquoise Caribbean Sea quietly lapping the shore all around.

The island is a favorite for International Living magazine and we have a large community of expats from the U.S. and Canada.

There are direct flights to Roatan from Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Dallas, Toronto, Montreal, Belize City, Panama City, San Salvador, and Grand Cayman. That means you can reach pure paradise in only a few hours from the U.S., Canada, and several other regional airport hubs.

But Roatan is truly a world apart in its beauty and idyllic way of life.

Roatan Cruise Ports

Roatan has two cruise ports welcoming ships from Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Costa, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Thomson Cruises, and more.

Mahogany Bay is the Carnival Cruise Lines port in Roatan and offers plenty of on-site activities, bars, and restaurants.

The Port of Roatan is located in the capital of Coxen Hole and offers quick, easy access to the most beautiful beaches and tons of fun activities.

If you’re taking a cruise to Roatan, you might feel the same way so many cruise ship visitors have felt before you: WOW!

This island is stunning and it often causes issues for people when they get back home.

You see, they can’t stop thinking about Roatan and life back home just seems so boring after their cruise visit here.

So, what’s the solution for those post-vacation blues? Don’t go home!

Ok, ok, I say this jokingly…

BUT!

If you do cruise to Roatan and fall in love, you’ll certainly want to book a return trip as soon as possible.

If you’ve been here before and already know you love this island, join the many others who do real estate tours during their time in port.

Check Out Roatan Real Estate During Your Cruise

Yup, that’s right! You can actually check out Roatan real estate during your cruise stop on the island.

While it’s a quick view of the opportunities available, doing a real estate tour during your cruise to Roatan will show you the variety and scope of our real estate market.

If you’re serious about potentially investing in real estate in Roatan, a real estate tour during your time in port can be your starting point.

Contact me to let me know when you’ll be here and let’s discuss your priorities.

I’m happy to show you around so you can better decide if this is the right investment for you.

Cost of Construction in Roatan

If you want to move to Roatan to live the island dream life, you could consider building your own home. If you’re not on a strict timeline for moving here, the cost of construction in Roatan might be more appealing than current inventory for real estate. Let’s go through the pros and cons of construction in Roatan.

Cost of Construction in Roatan

Right now the average cost per square foot in Roatan is between $90 and $110. That price different is based on wood versus concrete. Where you build your home might determine the materials that you should use, but more often, it’s simply a personal choice.

Traditional island homes are built of wood. They rest on stilts and then sometimes a second home will be built below, on the ground floor. More recently, construction has begun to vary widely as people from all around the world come to live in Roatan.

Given this huge interest in moving to Roatan, you might find that the current real estate market doesn’t offer the price point or construction style that you really want. Buying land and building your own home could be the alternative, with land prices still being quite affordable.

Pros of Building Your Own Home in Roatan

Building your own home in Roatan can be a dream come true. You’ve imagined your island lifestyle and the views you’ll enjoy from your front porch…you just need to make it happen.

In building your own home, you can choose exactly how you want everything laid out. You can choose whether your bedroom will face the sunrise or sunset. Align your kitchen and dining area for the best views from your hillside or beachfront location. Take advantage of the breezes and line up your windows for the optimal cross-breeze to cool your home. Building your own home is a fantastic option for many people.

Cons of Building Your Own Home in Roatan

The cons of building in Roatan are fairly obvious: as with construction anywhere, it can often take longer than initially anticipated. On an island, however, that extension is often much longer. Don’t underestimate the length of time building your own island home can take. It could be several years before it’s livable!

That being said, if you’re planning ahead for retirement, or intending to move when the kids graduate, or just easing into island life over the next several years…building your own home might be ideal. Slow and steady wins the race, remember?

Contractors and Builders in Roatan

If you decide to head down this path to take advantage of an affordable cost of construction in Roatan, I am more than happy to provide personal recommendations for contractors, builders, carpenters, architects, and even interior designers. Whatever you need, I can provide.

A really important note to remember is that this is a different country with a different climate and different regulations and different styles. I highly recommend you use a local architect who is familiar with Roatan to best design your island home.

You want to utilize the best materials and take advantage of the local climate and topography – oftentimes that means styling a home differently than you would do back home.

Move to Roatan

Moving to Roatan is a dream for many people. Looking at the real estate market, you might be shaking your head thinking that nothing looks perfect. Consider buying land and building on Roatan as an investment in yourself.

You can create your dream home from scratch. You can take it from imagination to reality, enjoying every stage along the way. And then when that dream home is finally ready, you can step into the island life exactly how you’ve always imagined it.

Move to Roatan to live your dream life. That’s what I did, and I have absolutely no regrets! Let me know what your dream home entails, and I’ll let you know whether building or buying would be better suited to your dreams.

Roatan Real Estate and the Roatan MLS

Did you know that Roatan operates a Multiple Listing Service (MLS), just like you’ll find in the United States or Canada? It’s true! We are unique in this region for coordinating our listings into a single database for both buyers and sellers to utilize. Let’s look deeper into how the Roatan MLS can help you with your Roatan real estate.

The Roatan Realtors Association is the professional organization behind the Roatan MLS. Each broker or agent is a member of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and CANABIRH (Honduran National Real Estate Association), so you can feel confident in the level of ethics and standards of practice of everyone listing on the Roatan MLS. You won’t have to worry about things going wrong with your real estate transaction.

Houses and Condos on the Island of Roatan

Anytime you’re moving to a new home, it’s important to understand your destination and the pros and cons of home design. On the tropical island of Roatan, you might encounter very different circumstances than what you’re used to back home. A tropical environment with unique critters and climate can mean a different style of home is necessary. Before you choose your new home in the Caribbean, here’s an idea of the differences between houses and condos on the island of Roatan.

Why Buy a House in Roatan

Houses offers privacy, space, and usually a garden area that you can fill with luscious tropical plants and flowers. Grow your own banana or mango trees, fill your garden with hummingbird feeders, and marvel at the vibrant flowers blossoming throughout the year.

If you buy a house in Roatan, you’ll get to enjoy the authentic Caribbean lifestyle. Hang your clothes to dry out in the sunshine, fill your home with fresh sea breezes, and lounge on your patio in complete privacy.

Why Buy a Condo in Roatan

Owning your own house offers privacy and space, but owning a condo offers you more freedom from maintenance. In a condo community, you have neighbors and designated professionals around you at all times, ensuring that your investment – your dream home – is well cared for and includes all the amenities you desire.

Living in an island condo community provides community spaces, like pools, restaurants, spas, gyms, and more. Additionally, most condo communities have beachfront access for you to enjoy. When the Caribbean Sea is your front yard, you don’t need much interior space at all!

If you’re more independent and want to revel in the adventure of living on a foreign tropical island, look for houses that will give you the chance to interact with the local community more. You’ll need to make friends to learn which hardware stores have what you need, which contractors can do what you want, and which utility companies will give you the best service. Those types of questions connect you to your neighbors, helping you to meet new people and learn more about your new home.

If your idea of tropical paradise is living in a community on the beach where you can step out your front door to enjoy poolside drinks or beachfront breakfast, take a look at the condo community of Infinity Bay. What’s in a Name on Roatan?

One of the nicest things about living on the island is that we have no addresses, street lights, or signs!! This is one of the reasons many Roatan home owners decide to give their property a name. If you walk around you will see some homes have a sign to display the name. Giving your Island home a name makes it easier to locate and adds character.
A few days ago I was reaching the Roatan MLS (multiple listing services) and I found some interesting names for homes.
-Casa Feliz – Casa Sonrisa -Casa Rara -Lionfish -Casa Maya -Jewel of the sea -Yellow Flower Duplex -Croushers -Lemon Tree House -Casa Doble -The Residences -Serinity Bay -Seagrove Retreat -Villas de Playa -Castillo Blanco -Casa de la Paz -Dos Palapas -Casa del Sol -Yellow Bird -Casablanca -Casa de las Flore -Casa Luz -Willows Green -Villa Shanti -Villa La Sirena -Casa Adams Blue- Castillo de Arboles
